Department of Bio-Chemistry


Courses 

B.Sc. (Hons. School) (3 Year Course)
B.Sc. (Hons. School) in Biochemistry is a three year integrated course. During this course besides Biochemistry Major, the students also study Chemistry, Microbiology, Mathematics. Biophysics and Computer Sciences as subsidiary courses. The department also offers subsidiary Biochemistry courses to the students of the departments of Anthropology, Biophysics. Botany. Microbiology and Zoology.

Eligibility for admission :
Admissions to the 1st year of B.Sc. (Hons. School) are made on the basis of marks obtained in the Common Entrance Test (plus admissible weightages) conducted by the Panjab University

M.Sc. (Hons. School) (2 Year Course)
The M.Sc. (Hons. School) in Biochemistry is a two year integrated course. The courses of study at M.Sc. Part-1 level include highly specialized papers in theory viz. Advanced Molecular Biology. Advanced Enzymology, Applications of Biochemistry to Biotechnology, Neuro-Biochemisiry. Clinical Biochemistry and Bio-Chemical Toxicology alongwith a course each in Biostalistics and Computational Techniques. At the M.Sc. Part-11 level, apart from the Seminars and Journal Clubs, a student has to work for the research thesis in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the M.Sc. degree.

Eligibility for admission :
Student who have passed the B.Sc. (Hons. School) examination in Biochemistry of this University without taking Entrance Test.

Admission based on Entrance Test :
B.Sc. (Pass or Hons.) examination of a recognised University with Biochemistry as an elective subject at B.Sc. level. Regarding details of Courses of study and their structure under Annual System, the syllabus published by the University/notified by the Department, may be considered.

Doctorate Degree
Facilities exist in the department for research work leading to the Ph.D. degree. The requirement for Ph.D. course is M.Sc. (Hons. School) in Biochemistry of Panjab University. Normally it lakes three years to complete the Ph.D.
